Many car owners purchase insurance through agents that provide policies underwritten by THE UNITED EQUITABLE INSURANCE COMPANY in SKOKIE, ILLINOIS.
The claims manager, RON CLARK, stated Chrysler informed their company that Chrysler vehicles can not be stolen without the use of a computer chip key. The exclusion in their policy does not provide coverage if a vehicle was stolen with the use of a key. Therefore they assume any vehicle that has been stolen, a key was used and they will not provide coverage.
The information given to insurance analyst Robin Tillery at the Illinois Dept. of Insurance by United Equitable and Chrysler caused the department to side with the insurance company in NOT covering theft claims.
A Claim for a stolen Chrysler 300 in Chicago, Illinois was denied and now the vehicle owner is $20,000 in debt to the Regional Finance Company (BB&T) in North Carolina, although a full coverage policy was active as required and verified by the finance company.
The 2006 Chrysler was purchased used from New Rogers dealership in Chicago and a vehicle report showed it had been used as a rental car out of state before being shipped to Chicago.
Many large cities are known for tow truck theft rings and lately car thieves have used lap top computers to re-program the vehicles software in order to start the car without a key. All Chrysler vehicle owners are advised to check the exclusions in their insurance policy.
